The former Somerset and Dorset Railway's Masbury Station, located between Binegar and Shepton Mallet, is to go on the market in September. The Midsomer Norton Station-based S&D Trust is seeking to raise £500,000 to purchase it.

The station opened with the line in 1874, but was never heavily used and consequently downgraded to a halt in 1938, closed to goods traffic in June 1963 and closed finally, along with virtually the rest of the line, in 1966.

The station, at 811 feet above sea level, was one of the highest stations in southern England.

The area has some potential for tourism and would make an excellent temporary terminus for the line from Midsomer Norton.

There is quite a bit of interest around the site e.g. Maesbury, an Iron Age fort is nearby. About half-a-mile of ramparts remains with a view to Glastonbury Tor. This is private land, but there is a public footpath across it.

The nearby railway cutting is an acre Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), because it exposes strata representing the middle and upper lower limestone shales and the basal black rock limestone, (early Carboniferous).

As part of a fund-raising campaign to purchase the soon-to-be-sold Masbury Station, the Trust at Midsomer Norton Station is holding a fund-raising Jazz Event on August 10th.

The Trust has launched an appeal to raise money to purchase Masbury Station. The current owner has given the Somerset and Dorset Heritage Trust first refusal, providing the necessary funds can be raised by September 30th.

This iconic station, very close to the line's summit on the Mendips, was once one of the places where steam train firemen could breathe a sigh of relief ahead of the descent to either Bath or Evercreech, depending on the train's direction.

If the Trust can raise £500,000 by the deadline, it will have a much more tangible and long-term major target for recreating the Somerset and Dorset Railway currently running at Midsomer Norton and help them make running the S&D at Masbury a very real prospect once more.

Jazz Up the Station on Saturday, August 10th: a fundraiser for Masbury Station Appeal featuring the Cavalier Jazzmen playing New Orleans-style trad jazz. Gates open at 1 p.m., with the band performing from 2–4 p.m.

The Wild West re-enactment group 'The Lawmen' will be in attendance.

Station facilities will include book stall, model railway stall, competitions, refreshment tent serving cream teas, ice cream parlour and more.
