This month’s mystery photo, provided by the Harptrees History Society, depicts a peaceful scene. Do you know what changes you would see if you stood in the same spot today? Please get in touch with the editor at [email protected] if you do.

Last month’s photo showed a building in Winford passed by many people each day as they travel from the Chew Magna direction down into the centre of the village. You may be able to read the name “Miners Arms” on the front. We believe it was taken about 1911. The identity of the people in the picture is not certain, but it is likely to show, among others, George and Amy Bull, with their young son John, and Amy’s sister Ethel, who were shown living there in the 1911 census.

Very young boys often wore dresses in those days. In later years the Andow family, still remembered by some villagers, took over at the pub and George Bull was farming up on the road to Felton. The pub closed in the 1950s.

The history society is always interested in old pictures of people, places and events in the Chew Valley and Wrington area. If you have any you would like to share, please email [email protected]

The society’s programme of summer walks and visits starts this month, with a guided tour behind the scenes at the M Shed in Bristol on Wednesday May 28th. Contact as above for more details
