A cancer survivor has written a cookbook to empower and inspire others faced by a critical illness or those interested in improving their health and wellbeing with nourishing foods and a holistic approach to health.
Maria Honeker, 47, from High Littleton, was inspired to write the book back in 2017, following her diagnosis with stage III Bowel cancer. Upon her own diagnoses, Maria, and her husband,Tony, spent many hours researching holistic ways of supporting her through cancer treatment. Adopting a mostly plant-based diet, and cutting out processed foods, was something she felt the needed to do as she cooked herself through this challenging time of her life.
'Eat Naturally - A Cancer Survivor's Cookbook' is a transformational guide that blends the genres of cookbook, health and wellness, and memoir. The book is a heartfelt and informative resource for individuals recovering from or managing cancer, health-conscious readers, and anyone seeking practical, plant-based recipes.
In the book, Maria, who did a couple of book talks in the Weleda Wellbeing tipi at this year's Valley Fest, shares her deeply personal journey of resilience and recovery after being diagnosed with bowel cancer at the age of 40, with two young children at home.
Beyond the recipes, Maria offers practical advice on kitchen tools, pantry essentials, and mindful eating practices, making this book a supportive companion for anyone looking to improve their diet and overall well-being. Maria's offers practical guidance for individuals recovering from or managing cancer and health-conscious readers interested in plant-based, whole-food recipes. The book also caters to various dietary preferences, including gluten-free and refined sugar-free options.
Maria’ personal story of resilience and empowerment serves to inspire readers to take control of their health through the joy of cooking and the wisdom of natural ingredients.
Maria said: “Food is not just sustenance; it's a powerful tool for healing and transformation. Cutting out processed foods and enjoying nourishing, healthy whole food alternatives in a quest to eat well should not be all about restrictions and limitations, but rather a joyful experience. I wrote this book to help inspire and empower others to embrace a holistic approach to health and to bring hope."
Following her recovery from stage III cancer, Maria now also runs free group cancer support sessions in her local community at Zen Rebel Studios in Midsomer Norton throughout the year. These sessions are funded by the HCRG Care Group.
