The show went ahead in spite of serious concerns over the excessive heat. The committee worried about people having sun stroke, that the dogs, horses and ferrets would be affected and that no one would turn up. But arrive they did and enough to make the show a success.
The dogs, horses and ferrets sensibly cancelled for the sake of the animals, but the stalls did a roaring trade, the magician (who replaced Elsa) was enthusiastically applauded, the music was much appreciated, the fun golf course was popular, the ice cream van had queues all day, the bar was very well supported and the tea tent had some lovely home-made cakes.
The mediaeval re-enactment was greeted with great applause and cheering, with sword clashing and vigorous fighting in spite of the fact the participants were wearing heavy clothing. The strongest man/woman competition was contested over many rounds. The classic and old cars, motor bikes and tractors paraded around the large ring, with the drivers being interviewed as they passed the commentary box.
The exhibition marquee was full of wonderful flowers and vegetables, albeit a much smaller number than usual thanks to lack of rain.
The raffle had some fantastic prizes including £120 worth of garden vouchers from Whitchurch Garden Centre, £100 basket of fruit from Somerset Toiletries, and an MOT from Temple Cloud Garage. Other very attractive prizes brought people flocking so much that we sold out of raffle tickets just before the draw.
The committee wishes to thank the Withers family for their kindness in letting the show take place in their field.
