DUE to unforeseen circumstances, Writhlington Flower Show committee were delayed in starting their preparations for this year’s Flower and Fete, but, to make up for lost time, they have been extra busy with the planning for the show.
The Flower Show schedule has now been complete and the committee are almost ready for the 135th Village Flower Show and Fete, set to be held on Saturday 17th August.
New classes have been included in the schedule this year to celebrate 200 years of the RNLI, giving recognition to those who have volunteered and who continue to volunteer.
Secretary Helen Gulliford said: “Like many gardeners, I have found the weather this year very challenging - a very wet spring so a late start, then a small heat wave, cold nights and not much sun. I hope our exhibitors have fared better than me. The Flower Show Committee are very aware of how important this event is each year, to not only Flower Show members, but the exhibitors, especially the children and for those more senior members of our society and village.
“The committee also understand how important it is that we promote activities that benefit the health and wellbeing of our community such as gardening, cooking, and arts and crafts. Schedules for exhibitors are available now, there are classes for all the family. If you have grown it or made it, we would love to see it!”
The Flower Show and Fete will be opened by Show President, Mrs Hilary Denning, at 2.30pm.
The Flower Show will see the welcome return of the Mendip Beekeepers Association who will be on hand to help answer questions and give advice to anyone interested in bees and beekeeping. Kilmersdon Gardeners will be making their debut with a plant stall and members will be on hand to help with advice and gardening knowledge.
The ‘mini Olympics’, will include races for the children with medals and certificates for the winners. The South Wansdyke Archery Club will also be at St Mary’s School field where they meet weekly to practice. Supported by Team GB, they have some talented young archers, and also champion accessibility in sport with facilities for wheelchair archers. Their members have kindly offered taster sessions for those interested in trying the sport.
The Mendip Brass Band will provide music throughout the afternoon. Norton Radstock Photographic Society will host a display in the Village Hall.
Other attractions include skittles, tombola, sand play for the children and Kelly’s Donkeys. Guide Dogs for the Blind and the RSPCA will have information stalls. There will also be craft stalls, tea and cake, and much more.
Trophies and prizes will be given out by the President in the marquee at 5.00pm.
