Housing Association Curo have announced they will demolish Walnut Buildings in Radstock. Last year, as part of a planned programme of major improvements at Walnut Buildings, Curo carried out a number of detailed surveys and inspections to understand the condition of each of the four blocks of flats, comprising of 32 apartments.

The decision to demolish comes after recent in-depth surveys revealed that the type of construction makes it very difficult to bring the buildings up to an acceptable standard.

Curo have worked with Bath & North East Somerset Council and residents at Walnut Buildings over the past year to find them new homes in the local area. All residents have now moved to suitable accommodation, with the last few households moving out in September this year.

Curo will apply to B&NES for permission to demolish the four blocks. Subject to local authority approval and tendering of demolition services, it is anticipated that Walnut Buildings will be demolished by the end of March 2021.

Local residents will be kept informed about the next steps and Curo will work with the selected contractor to minimise disruption to the local community during demolition.

Curo will develop proposals for new housing on the site and will consult with the local community and stakeholders at the

appropriate time.

Cllr Bruce Shearn (Radstock, Lib-Dem), told The Journal: “I have been waiting 25 years for this to happen. It has been a long time coming. Even before the Grenfell Tower tragedy, it always worried me.

“I’m excited that Radstock will finally have the new housing that it deserves.

“This is really good news – if you hear cheering from up the hill, it’ll be me.”

Avon Fire & Rescue found the cladding on the building was not the same as that used at Grenfell, but that improvements were needed.
