A first aid session designed to teach dads what to do in an emergency involving children was held in Midsomer Norton earlier this month.

The session was hosted by the Mendip and District Round Table at the HeartTalks’ office in order to encourage new members to join the group.

Training was provided by Talliwood and guided attendees on some of the major health issues parents may face with their child, such as:

  • Choking
  • Unresponsive babies/children
  • CPR
  • Burns
  • Swallowing of nasty liquids/items
  • Defibrillator training

The event built confidence within the group and those who attended found it helpful, with a number of them staying on after the session to ask questions. The course was delivered in a relaxed and comfortable style.

The group already has a number of activities lined up in the near future, such as beer tasting and footgolf. To find out more, contact the group on Facebook here: https://www.facebook.com/MendipandDistrictRoundTable642

The round table also hosts the annual fireworks display at Midsomer Norton Cricket Club, raising £6,000 for local charities.

Vice chairman for Mendip and District Round Table, Matt Escott said “We came up with the idea in an attempt to engage with new potential members for Mendip and District Round Table, formerly Norton Radstock Round Table.

“We've really struggled to get our membership up in recent years although from 2022 we've had a huge increase from two to seven members with a number of young chaps coming along and considering joining.

“The idea of the first aid was just to promote a community event of 'first aid for dads' for free which we promoted only through and on our Facebook page.“

The group hopes to hold another similiar event later in the year.
