Double Hills, a meadow in the village of Paulton, is known for its Annual Memorial to remember the twenty three brave lives lost when Gilder RJ113, enroute to Arnhem, crashed into the meadow.
All twenty-three died on Sunday, 17th September 1944 and have been remembered and honoured by the memorial which was built by the Royal Monmouth Regt. Sappers and established in 1979. They were the first casualties of the Battle of the Arnhem “Bridge too Far” Operation Market Garden.
The event this year, which is annually organised by Peter Yeates, took place on Sunday, 4th September 2022. Peter served in the Royal Navy and has been made an Honorary Member of the Airborne Engineers’ Association.
