Longvernal Primary School celebrated one of its highlights of the year and prepared many activities for World Book Week.

As a ‘reading for pleasure school’, staff encourage pupils to immerse themselves in books every day, but this special week-long event takes their love of reading to the next level.

The National Literacy Trust says on its website that research shows “twice as many children and young people who enjoy reading in their free time have above average reading skills than children who don’t enjoy it.”

One of the most eagerly anticipated activities is the ‘extreme reading’ competition, where children - and even staff - are caught reading in the most unusual and creative places.

Alongside this, pupils brought their favourite characters to life by dressing up, explored the work of talented illustrators, wrote insightful book reviews and crafted imaginative book box scenes.

Adding an extra spark of excitement, the Natural Theatre Company returned to deliver captivating workshops, bringing class novels to life in ways that left pupils enthralling.

Cindy James, English lead at Longevernal Primary School in Midsomer Norton, said: "At Longvernal, reading is at the heart of everything we do. We know that fostering a love of books from an early age is key to lifelong learning, and Book Week is a wonderful opportunity for pupils to celebrate the stories that inspire them."

This year’s highlight was a special visit from acclaimed author Joffre White, who wowed key stage two pupils with his ‘reading motivator’ show and led dynamic writing workshops.

The excitement continued as he stayed for a book signing, giving pupils the chance to meet a real-life author and take home a signed copy of his work.

With so much joy and creativity packed into one week, book week at Longvernal proved to be an unforgettable celebration of the magic of reading.
