REEL People Films, a local community film group, will launch its new season at Kilmersdon Village Hall, featuring a selection of movies throughout the winter.

The season begins on Friday, October 11, with a screening of Scrapper, directed by British filmmaker Charlotte Regan. The film is described as a charming and joyful comedy drama and as a perfect way to start a winter weekend.

Scrapper, the first film from the young British director, tells the story of 12-year-old Charlie who has been living alone in the council flat she shared with her mum until she died of cancer.

Charlie fills the flat with her own special magic, but when her absent dad turns up out of the blue, she has to face reality. The film had great reviews from critics and audiences but had only a very limited release locally. The hall doors and bar will open at 7.15pm for a chance to have a drink and chat, and the film starts at 8pm.

Barry Fowler, the group’s chair, said: “We always look forward to the opening night of a new season, and this one is extra special. We had a reboot last season with a great new committee, new state-of-the-art equipment, and lots of new faces in the audience. There’s a lot of energy and interest in the group, and we have put together an exciting season of films to take you through the winter with something for everyone.

“Everyone is welcome at Reel People Films – you can come along as a guest and pay £6 on the door, or you can join us for the whole season of eight films for £30. There’s also a special ‘Early Bird’ membership for £25 if you join before the season opens or at the first film.

“We show films you might have missed or weren’t able to see locally, as well as films from different cultures. We don’t show trailers or adverts, and what you do get is a warm, friendly atmosphere and a high-quality cinema presentation on your doorstep. So please give us a try, and if you haven’t been for a while, we would love to see you again.”
