After several successful summer field trips, the Harptrees History Society’s new season of meetings will start this month with a talk by Colin Budge, who has a wealth of knowledge about the area.

‘The roads are remarkably bad, narrow, deep and fill’d with great loose stones’ - Edmund Rack 1780s.

He will be describing the local roads and bridges across the Chew Valley over five hundred years, many of which are still in use today, and how they were managed, from manor courts to turnpike trusts. Who paid? Who did the work? What changes came with the turnpikes?
