Alike to any other, 2022 has been a year of planning for Midsomer Norton and Radstock Town Council’s, but this year our communities have seen some big changes from demolitions and renovations, to brand new projects. The Journal approached both Town Council’s to discuss how this year has gone and what they are planning for 2023.

Midsomer Norton Town Council have been busy with various projects this year, including the launch of their very own website, the Garden of Friendship project, Wellow Brook Walk and the Multi-use Games Area at West Clewes, as well as funds secured from the Somer Valley Rediscovered project.

A big project, involving many in the community, is the renovation of the Town Hall, which started in September. ‘The plans are to build a four-story extension to the rear of the building to house offices (Town Trust, Community Trust and Town Council, catering facilities, meeting and storage rooms and an archive for the Town Trust as well as a new fire escape/staircase to all levels and new toilet facilities.) Within the existing building core there would also be a new reception, new staircase to all levels and ticket office.’

The Council understand the need for community input in planning decisions and the importance of listening to residents needs.

Gordon Mackay, Deputy Mayor of Midsomer Norton, told The Journal: “The Town Council have had a very successful stall (shared with Somer Valley FM) at the Farmers Market every month since September which has been really well received.

“It’s been a great opportunity to talk with traders and residents.

“Next year, I’d like to see a lot more effort put into the market, with greater exposure, promotional give-aways. And to work to link the Famers Market with the Craft Fair and other events to encourage footfall between them.

“Discussions are underway to expand Midsomer Norton’s market offering and hopefully make more use of the Town Park.

The Journal approached Somer Valley FM’s Station Manager, Richard Burgess for comment on the markets success: “The monthly Somerset Farmer’s Market is an important event for us all locally. I’m delighted to help support our Town Council’s increased efforts to both spread news and engage with our community, whilst we share our stall monthly.

“With new and big re-developments started this year, including the Town Hall and new market area, 2023 will be pivotal for Midsomer Norton to attract greater numbers of visitors, local shoppers, and general footfall.

“Having attended several Council meetings, and received financial grant support as a community organisation, I know the collective Council will is to improve our community, whilst ensuring increased costs are met.

“Hopefully with this shared market space, more of our community will also want to get involved with their local Council.”

The Town Council have worked to update their communications policy in 2022, meaning more businesses will receive their support and Councillors will be out on the High Street really engaging with businesses and doing what we can to promote them.

The Town Council and Community Trust will continue to work very closely in 2023, with a lot of projects set to run through the Trust after a successful year of events, including Midsomer Norton Fayre, Jubilee and the annual Wassail celebrations., as well as the success of the community cinema.

Midsomer Norton Town Council’s elections will take place in May.
