Being a Reading for Pleasure school is at the heart of Longvernal. Their year-long focus and celebration of a love of reading culminates in the fantastic spectacle that is Book Week.
Amongst other book-based activities, the pupils dress-up as characters from their favourite books, study illustrators and design their own art work, pen book reviews, stay for bedtime stories, visit the local library and much more. The children even take part in an extreme reading competition, where they are ‘caught’ reading in weird and wonderful places.
The week goes out with a bang as the Natural Theatre Company visits and the children join in with workshops, based on each class’ novel.
Cindy James, English Lead, said: “At Longvernal we understand the importance of developing a love of reading in all children. Our Book Week celebrations are really an extension of everything we do on a daily basis.”
Longvernal’s pupils love reading and books: Book Week really is the highlight of their year!
