A STRETCH of the M5 in Somerset has reopened after a half-mile diesel spill forced its this morning (Thursday, February 6).
A section of the northbound carriageway between junction 24 and junction 23 in Bridgwater was closed after fuel from a heavy goods lorry leaked over the motorway.
National Highways has confirmed two lanes have opened but warns of residual delays and further closures tonight.
National Highways said in a statement: “The northbound M5 has been reopened following an earlier fuel spillage incident in North Somerset.
“The northbound carriageway has been closed between junctions 24 (Bridgwater/Minehead) and 23 (Highbridge/Glastonbury) since an incident at 10.20am in which a lorry’s ruptured fuel tank spilled diesel across a half-mile section of carriageway.
“Following vehicle recovery and treatment work on the carriageway, lanes two and three have now reopened to traffic, but with residual delays expected, National Highways is advising drivers to plan ahead and allow extra time for their journeys.
“Overnight emergency resurfacing will be required on lane one and the hard shoulder, and to enable that work, lanes one and two will be closed past the scene from 9pm.”
