MOIST and milder air from the Atlantic could push snowfall further south with wintry showers forecast across Somerset today, the Met Office warns.
The UK has been gripped by several weather warnings since the start of the New Year, with heavy rain, snow and ice bringing widespread travel disruption.
A number of schools closed in parts of North East Somerset yesterday after overnight snow and ice rendered roads impassable across the district.
The Met Office warns Somerset and the South of England could be in for more snow this afternoon amid a weather warning which is in place from 9am until 11am today (Wednesday, January 8).
Forecasters say there is a chance of snowfall in parts of the South West. Jason Kelly, chief forecaster for the Met Office, said: “Weather conditions will start to change from the South West on Wednesday, with fronts from the Atlantic bringing milder air along with moisture.”
Thursday and Friday will bring continued low temperatures with snow and ice warnings likely to be issued as confidence in the most likely impacted areas increases.
Fronts moving in from the southwest on Friday and Saturday bring the potential for more snow, with the possibility of further warnings.
Deputy Chief Forecaster, Chris Almond, said: “Thursday will see another cold night, with potentially the lowest temperatures of the Winter so far, -15°C or so is possible in locations with lying snow in Scotland or northern England.
