On Saturday, 13th May Midsomer Norton Choral Society joined with Frome’s Oakfield Choir and Orchestra to perform an evening of Mozart pieces at Holy Trinity Church in Frome, which was a wonderful colourful setting for some great works.

The choirs’ conductor Neil Moore led the performance and was joined by professional soloists Amy Carson, Robert Folkes, Maria Danshivar and Frederick Long.

Despite competition from The Eurovision Song Contest that evening, the concert was a complete sell-out!

In the first half, the audience was treated to Regina Coeli in C, which is thought to have been written by Mozart when he was just 16-years-old. It was often performed in Salzburg Cathedral at Easter. This was followed by the Clarinet Concerto in C, superbly played by Neil with the backing of the twenty or so piece orchestra with its variety of instruments. This was one of Mozart’s last purely instrumental works.

The second half was devoted to Mozart’s, Great Mass in C Minor, which must surely be one of the most beautiful pieces of choral music ever written. The choir, the soloists and the orchestra thoroughly enjoyed performing a piece which was written by Mozart to celebrate his wedding.

All those taking part were given long and rousing applause for their efforts to provide a wonderful evening for music lovers.

Both choirs will take part in the Frome Festival in July: Oakfield with a coronation-themed concert with works by Mozart and Handel in Holy Trinity Church, Frome on 12th July at 6pm and Midsomer with an opera by Monteverdi – Orfeo, in Mells Church on 16th July.
