Can you guess the location of this week’s mystery photo? Last week, we received many correct answers and we’re keen to see how locals do this time!

Last week’s photo was in fact taken in Camerton at Meadgate, or specifically the Camerton Inn.

Eric Brain said: “This week’s mystery picture is of the old Camerton Inn, located at Meadgate between Tunley and Timsbury, at the foot of Tunley Hill. I remember it well from passing by daily on my commute to Bath—though it’s very much changed now…”

Here at the Journal, we love hearing your anecdotes about memories and experiences from the local area, and the connection people have with where they live.

Bryn Hawkins said: “I can see my house where I live now. I came to Meadgate when I was two, 81 years ago, and we are still in the same house.

“The first building is the old Camerton Inn, with the row of cottages to the right. We are the last cottage in the first row before they get nearer the road. As boys in the '50s, we played football across the road, very rarely seeing a car. On Sundays, the miners came up early to play football up and down the road before the pub opened at 12pm. The Inn is now an Airbnb.”

Camerton, famous for its Manor, dates back to the reign of Alfred the Great, when it was granted to the monks of Glastonbury. In the 14th century, the manor passed between the Dinham and Paulton families, before being transferred to the Carew family in the 15th century. The current house was built by John Jarrett in 1835, replacing an earlier manor.

Congratulations to all who identified the Camerton Inn correctly or even Meadgate, best of luck with this week’s mystery photo challenge. We look forward to seeing your guesses and appreciate your continued participation
