Can you identify the location in this week’s Mystery Photograph?

Each week, we challenge you, our readers, to test your knowledge of the area with a picture of a local landmark from days gone by.

Last week’s Mystery Photograph sparked plenty of intrigue as the Radstock Museum, which provides them to The Journal, was also unaware of its true origins, but know it was taken somewhere locally.

Instead of focusing on a specific, well-known location, the image came from somewhere around Midsomer Norton and the Somer Valley, but its exact location has puzzled a few.

However, Pam Young said: “I think this is Manor Farm, Stratton-on-the-Fosse, where Roots Connections is now.”

The photograph features an image of a house, possibly a large farmhouse. It is clearly situated in one of the more rural areas around Midsomer Norton. While Pam has hazard an excellent and educated guess we believe to be correct, others speculated it might be closer to Radstock or Paulton.

Midsomer Norton and Radstock are both rich in history, with deep roots in agriculture and industry. Known for their historic mining heritage, these areas were once at the heart of the Somerset coalfields, with numerous rural properties scattered across the countryside. Given the region’s farming background, it’s not surprising that the photograph might depict a large farmhouse or country estate.

Over the years, some of these houses have been passed down or modified, reflecting the area's mining history. The house in the photograph could be one of these former farmhouses, now potentially altered or obscured by newer developments or changes to the landscape.

Despite Pam’s guess, we’re still hoping to receive some more insight into the photograph. It’s clear that Midsomer Norton and the Somer Valley are full of hidden stories and overlooked gems, waiting to be rediscovered.
