Did you recognise last month's scene? It showed the “Prince of Waterloo” pub in Winford, passed by many on their way to the airport or to the A38 into Bristol. It was once thatched but the roof caught fire in 1964. No longer boarded up, it now boasts a restaurant and rooms.
Parts of the building itself may date back to the sixteenth century, although the name does not appear on documents until 1816. However, there might have been an existing pub on the site, which was renamed to celebrate victory at the Battle of Waterloo the year before.
The photo was taken in the 1990s by local resident Jim Webster, who kindly passed it to the Harptrees History Society for use as a mystery photo. .The history society is always interested in old pictures of people, places and events in the Chew Valley and Wrington area.
