Can you identify the location in this week’s Mystery Photograph?
Last week, we received more correct answers than we’ve had in recent editions – it was Paulton hospital.
Sue Granger wrote in and said: “I believe this is Paulton hospital where I used to work in the 70s.”
The current Paulton Memorial Hospital, which opened in 1923, is the original building. It was built as a memorial to the local soldiers who lost their lives in World War One. Before its construction, there wasn’t a dedicated hospital in Paulton. The local community played a significant role in funding and establishing the facility, making it the first major healthcare centre in the area.
In its early years, the hospital provided essential medical services, with a particular focus on maternity care. As the decades passed, it adapted to the changing needs of the community, offering a range of services from outpatient clinics to physiotherapy and rehabilitation.
Though healthcare has evolved, the hospital’s role as a vital resource for local families has remained constant. Its enduring presence is testament to the spirit of those who helped establish it and the generations of people who have benefited from its care.
Now, there are 28 beds for inpatients in the hospital ward including six single rooms and the largest bay having six beds. An outpatient service operates five days a week, Monday to Friday. Bath and North East Somerset Primary Care Trust provides a specialist local outpatient service.
The hospital also has other specialists offering advice, eg, diabetic nurse specialist, continence advisors, and a one-stop INR clinic weekly and diagnostic ultrasound scans once or twice weekly. The hospital also has a maternity unit, managed by Royal United Hospitals Bath NHS Foundation Trust which performs approximately 120 deliveries a year.
Congratulations to all who identified Paulton hospital correctly, and best of luck to those who take part in this week’s Mystery Photograph challenge. We look forward to seeing your guesses and appreciate your continued participation.
