Congratulations to Paul Hancock and Jeff Parsons who gave the correct answer this week.

Manor House, in Mells, is a historic country residence with origins in medieval times. The present structure, primarily dating to the 16th century, replaced an earlier manor. Notable for its Jacobean architectural style, the house features Doulting stone construction, large mullioned windows, and intricately carved doorways, reflecting both the period’s design sensibilities and local craftsmanship.

Manor House has long-standing historical ties to the Horner family, who rose to prominence during the English Civil War. In the 19th and 20th centuries, the property served as a gathering place for prominent intellectuals and artists, including poet Siegfried Sassoon and architect Sir Edwin Lutyens, the latter of whom contributed to the garden design. The house is also linked to the nursery rhyme Little Jack Horner, which some sources suggest may reference the Horner family.

The house and its gardens, which are occasionally open to the public, remain privately owned but hold a notable place in the heritage of Mells. With its preserved architecture and serene setting, the property represents an important part of Somerset's cultural and historical landscape.
