Congratulations to Vivienne Moon who got this one correct, Vivienne said: “This week’s Mystery Photograph is of John Shearn’s butcher’s shop. It was on the left as you turn from Stone’s Cross down into the High Street, Midsomer Norton.”

Another correct answer came from Paul Hancock, a regular participant in the Mystery Photograph challenge and someone who frequently guesses correctly.

Midsomer Norton High Street has long been the commercial and social heart of the town, with roots tracing back to the medieval period when it likely developed as a market area serving the surrounding rural community.

Its growth accelerated during the 19th century, driven by the prosperity of the Somerset Coalfield, which brought an influx of workers and spurred the expansion of shops, inns, and services. The architecture along the High Street reflects this history, with Victorian and Edwardian buildings alongside earlier structures, many retaining their original stone-fronted charm.

Landmarks such as St. John the Baptist Church and the Town Hall highlight the area’s historical significance, while former market spaces recall its trading past. Today, the High Street blends its rich heritage with modern functionality, serving as a vibrant hub of independent shops, cafes, and community activities while benefiting from conservation efforts to preserve its character.

As we kick off this week’s challenge, we’d love to see your guesses continue to roll in . Whether you’ve joined us before or are trying this for the first time, your contributions are valued.
