CAN you guess where this week’s Mystery Photograph was taken?
Each week the Journal challenges its readers to test their local knowledge by identifying a historic location from days gone by in the area.
Last week’s picture was taken at the Hollow in Dunkerton.

This week’s photograph proved to be a particularly tricky one, as no one managed to guess the correct location.
Dunkerton is a village located approximately four miles south of Bath, in the Bath and North East Somerset area. Its history dates back to at least the Domesday Book of 1086, where it was recorded as "Dunechetone," meaning "farmstead on a hill."
The village has long been an agricultural community, with farming playing a central role in its economy and development over the centuries.
Historically, Dunkerton's location near the River Avon provided a vital transport route, contributing to trade and the movement of goods. The surrounding landscape remains reflective of its agricultural roots, with many of the village’s buildings constructed from local limestone, characteristic of the area’s traditional architecture.
In the 18th and 19th centuries, the rise of the coal industry in the nearby town of Radstock had an impact on Dunkerton, with the growth of mining affecting the region’s economy.
Additionally, the construction of the Somerset and Dorset Railway line in the mid-1800s brought further changes to the area, although Dunkerton itself largely retained its rural character.
Despite the industrial developments nearby, Dunkerton remained a primarily rural community, with many residents commuting to Bath during the 19th and 20th centuries as the city expanded.
Today, Dunkerton retains its historical charm, with many of its original features still visible in the village's architecture and landscape. The village continues to serve as a peaceful, rural community, offering residents a tranquil lifestyle while benefiting from its close proximity to the city of Bath.
The Journal, in partnership with Radstock Museum, thanks readers for their enthusiasm for the Mystery Photograph feature.
