Police have confirmed a dog which attacked and killed a 19-year-old woman in Bristol has now been put down for 'public safety' reasons.

A spokesperson said rumours it was 'shot in the street' were untrue and it was taken away to be 'humanely' put to sleep.

The process to fully determine the breed was described as a 'complex one' although it was suspected to be an XL Bully.

Two suspects remain in police custody and have yet to be questioned so police asked the public not to speculate on what happened within the flat, where the attack was understood to have taken place.

The spokesperson added: "Our enquiries are at an early stage; we have two people in custody to question to help us understand what happened prior to our attendance and ask people not to speculate about the circumstances while our investigation is ongoing.

"It was sedated and taken away and it has been put down on the grounds of public safety. It was not done at the scene.

"We are still to determine the type of breed as it is a complex assessment."

Flowers have now been placed outside the home and the police cordon was lifted earlier this morning.
