ELECTION DAY looms ever closer for Saltford residents with a Bath and North East Somerset Council (B&NES) by-election for the Saltford ward taking place on Thursday, January 16.
The by-election was called after sitting councillor Alison Streatfeild-James resigned, having taken a job at the Financial Conduct Authority, which necessitates her not holding any political office.
She was elected in March 2023 having beaten independent councillor Christopher Warren by 33 votes. She held the office for 18 months before resigning with immediate effect.
The Liberal Democrats currently occupy 40 of the 59 seats in B&NES, while Labour have seven, independent councillors have six, Conservatives have three and Greens have two.

Residents voting at a polling station will need to show photo ID. A list of accepted forms of photo ID is available on the council website or by calling 01225 477333.
Voters without an accepted form of photo ID can apply for a free Voter Authority Certificate online or by completing a paper form, which can be requested either by calling 01225 477333 or by emailing [email protected].
The deadline to apply for a certificate for this by-election is 5pm, Wednesday January 8. More information about photo ID can be found online.
Residents voting by post do not need to provide a photo ID, nor will need to acquire a Voter Authority Certificate to vote this way.
New applications to vote by proxy must be received by the electoral registration officer by 5pm, Wednesday January 8.
