Children from Cameley CEVC Primary School were one of many local schools to witness the excitement in Bath last Thursday, as the city hosted the Stage Five finish of the Tour of Britain, which saw around 120 of the world’s top professional cyclists, including Mark Cavendish and Bradley Wiggins, racing.
The stage began in Aberdare at 11 a.m. and finished in Bath in the afternoon having crossed South Wales and Gloucestershire. The cyclists raced on the A431 through Kelston, onto Newbridge Hill, across the top of Chelsea Road, onto Upper Bristol Road, past Windsor Bridge and Royal Victoria Park’s children’s play area, finishing on Royal Avenue, where there was a cycle village with giant screens and activities taking place throughout the day.
Cameley Primary School Headteacher, Hannah Maggs, said: “This was a (nearly) whole school trip from Year 1 through to Year 6. All of the children had an amazing day with lots of fun activities and events on offer.
“The cycling was phenomenal and we were so impressed with the speed and furious racing of the riders!”
Commenting on the event, a spokesperson from B&NES Council said this week: “It was a great success, we estimate over 10,000 people came along to see the finish and the organisers, sponsors and all the schools who came along were very happy.”
