RISHI Sunak has announced he will step down as the leader of the Conservative Party after Labour swept to a landslide victory in the General Election.
The outgoing Prime Minister apologised to the nation, as well as his parliamentary candidates, campaigners and those MPs who have served their communities over the last 14 years and will now be leaving the House of Commons.
He said: “I have heard your anger, your disappointment, and I take responsibility for this loss. To all the Conservative candidates and campaigners who have worked tirelessly without success, I’m sorry we couldn’t deliver what your efforts deserved.”
The Liberal Democrats are celebrating victory in Somerset where they have taken seven out of 10 seats in a General Election which has brought an end to Rishi Sunak’s Conservative Government.
The party took Frome and East Somerset, Glastonbury and Somerton, Tiverton and Minehead, Taunton and Wellington, Wells and Mendip, Yeovil and Bath, with Labour claiming Weston-super-Mare and North East Somerset and Hanham, with Bridgwater becoming the only conservative constituency in the county.
