Uncertainty looms for Sainsbury’s in Somerset after the supermarket giant announced plans to cut of 3,000 jobs nationwide.

Supermarket bosses are looking to shut down its remaining cafés, patisseries and pizza counters in a move to “simplify the business.”

Sainsbury’s has stores in Taunton, Midsomer Norton, Frome, Street, Bridgwater, Bath and two in Keynsham.

The retailer could also see a reduction of around 20 per cent in senior management roles as part of plans to focus on fewer, bigger roles and to simplify its head office and management teams.

Chief executive Simon Roberts told the BBC the business was facing a "particularly challenging cost environment".

The supermarket giant is currently working to £1bn worth of costs and the chain had to make "tough choices", said Mr Roberts.

It will shut down its remaining 61 cafés and, as well as pizza and patisserie, will also dispense with its hot food counters. Instead it will make "the most popular items available in the aisle".

Two weeks ago, Sainsbury's said it would raise its average hourly pay by 5% to £12.60. But the wage increase will be introduced in two phases "to help manage a particularly tough cost-inflation environment".
