Members of the SWALLOW Charity collaborated with the Somer Valley Rotary Club to plant purple crocus bulbs, a gesture to show their commitment to the End Polio Now campaign.
On Tuesday, October 22, members of the SWALLOW Charity gardening team began planting purple crocus bulbs, an experience they described as "a different activity for the gardening team, which they all enjoyed."
Polio is a potentially deadly infectious disease that primarily affects children under five, and the choice of purple crocus bulbs is symbolic of this cause, as children worldwide who receive the polio vaccine have their little fingers dipped in purple dye to indicate their vaccination.
SWALLOW is a charity led by its members, who are teenagers and adults with learning disabilities. The organisation provides a wide variety of services to support individuals in all aspects of their lives.
Phil Edmonds, from Somer Valley Rotary, said: "These purple crocuses represent that purple dye and that commitment to ending polio by inoculation. "It's a great initiative. We're 99 per cent there on eradicating polio and it's certainly very worthwhile."
SWALLOW Charity provides a wide range of help and support for people with learning disabilities. To find out more about their work visit: www.swallowcharity.org.
