Last week’s Mystery Photograph proved a little easier than the previous. Thank you to everyone who took the time to guess Bishop Sutton.
Somerset Coalfield Life said the photograph was taken of: Colliery Road in Bishop Sutton.
Well done to the following for guessing correctly: Paul Hancock, Jeff Parsons, Peter Box, Eddie Attwood, Les Box, Hannah Selway, Jonathan Griffin.
Many thanks to Eric Brain, who said: “This week’s Mystery Picture is of the A368 Wick Road, in Bishop Sutton.
“The photographer has his back to what is now the front wall of the Village Hall; the Spar shop (formerly the blacksmiths) is now out of shot to the left, and in the background can be seen the headgear of Jesse Lovell’s Bishop Sutton Colliery.”
Another thank you goes to Susan Spear, who said: “I certainly do not have to guess where this photograph was taken!
“In the foreground you will see an old cottage. When this building became condemned, it was knocked down and two semi detached houses were built on this land. This was around 1930.
“My Grandfather, William Elmes, had these houses built as he was the village Baker in Bishop Sutton, which later became Montgomery’s. My parents lived in No. 2 The Laurels, and her sister No. 1. My family house was built to the right of the old cottage on land also belonging to my grandfather, William Elmes.
“The actual main road is now known as Wick Rd., but according to my late mother it was known as “Out Weeks“.
“The old cottages which we called The Rank are still there and fetching lots of money when on the market. This very picture hangs in my hall.”
