Last week’s Mystery Photograph stumped a few of you - there were guesses for Farrington Gurney, Midsomer Norton and West Harptree which were unfortunately incorrect. We can in fact reveal that the photograph was taken in Temple Cloud! Well done to those who got it right.
Thank you to the following readers who sent in their correct guesses:
Jennifer, Martin Horler, Eric Brain and Mike Ford.
Congratulations to Michael Flower who gave extensive insight into the background of this photograph. He said: “This mystery photograph is the General Stores in Temple Cloud, by The Green on Cameley Road.
“There is a record of a shop on the site in 1840 then run by James, Samuel and Joseph Perrin. The business was described as that of wool staplers, cheese factors, linen and woollen drapers, grocers and flour factors. They kept the shop until the 1870s when Abraham Hatherall took it over as a grocery shop. In the 1880s the shop was taken over by Joseph Morley. In the late 1890s John Appleby had taken over what was then known as Temple Shop. Mr Sage later used the premises as a motorcycle repair shop and the shop's final occupier was Mr Veater as a leather goods shop.
“The building was demolished in the latter part of the twentieth century. As to the date of the image, pre-1900 perhaps. Fry's Cocoa dates back to the late 1860's at least so with what appears to be clothes hanging in the window the image could well go back to the time of the Perrins' ownership.”
Some excellent facts there from Mr Flower. The unblurred version of the image shows that it was Appleby’s store at the time, but some great detective work shown there nonetheless!
