TV personality Amanda Holden celebrated outside Heart HQ in Leicester Square after overcoming severe rain in Somerset during her 250-mile cycle challenge from Cornwall to London.
Amanda battle through torrential downpours in Somerset en-route to Frome on the second day of the challenge, which raised money for Heart FM charity Global’s Make Some Noise.
Amanda, who co-hosts the Heart Breakfast Radio Show with Jamie Theakston, returned to the station’s studios in London’s Leicester Square where she was greeted with celebration after completing her mammoth cycling challenge at 8.30am on Friday, October 11.
Amanda’s ‘Big Ride to Work’ challenge began in Cornwall on Monday, October 7, before she cycled through Devon, Somerset, Berkshire, Wiltshire and Surrey before arriving in London - in time for Global’s Make Some Noise Day.
On day-two of her journey, Amanda battled through torrential rain as she cycled from Taunton to Frome. She said: "The weather is biblical. It's coming down in stair rods, as they said on Paddington. I'm honestly soaked to the skin, my bum, everything's wet, but only my thumbs are aching.
Amanda was originally set to arrive in Frome on Tuesday, October 8, at 2.20pm but the extreme weather, compounded by a Met Office yellow warning for heavy rain, thunderstorms, and lightning over Somerset, delayed her by just under three hours, with her finally arriving at 5pm.
She described the ride as "brutal" at times, with reduced visibility, slippery roads, and frequent downpours provided an additional challenge. However, she persevered through these challenging conditions and safely completed her journey with nothing other than a “wet bum”.
The ride has raised £370,000 for Global’s Make Some Noise, a charity that helps small organisations supporting disadvantaged people across the UK. The broadcaster’s commitment to finishing the challenge, despite significant hurdles, has been praised by her fans and the charity.
Amanda was welcomed home by her fellow Heart Breakfast team including showbiz reporter Ashley Roberts and Jason King. Amanda Holden’s husband, Chris, also joined the celebrations and Amanda popped open a bottle of champagne.
When arriving in London, Amanda said: “Oh, my bum is killing me, everything is killing me. It was amazing, the weather was terrible, some of the hills were barbaric but what a gorgeous way to see the UK. I’ve done the drive, it takes seven hours sometimes. Some of those hills were so upright I’d have been quicker walking.”
