WELLS marked the festive season with its annual Christmas Market which was relocated to Cathedral Green due to safety concerns over Storm Darragh.
Hundreds of shoppers visited the market on Saturday, December 14, browsing the variety of stalls offering food, beverages, and handcrafted gifts. The event provided an opportunity for visitors to support local businesses and enjoy the festive atmosphere in the centre of Wells.
The event, usually held on the Bishop’s Palace Green, was relocated to Cathedral Green with the agreement of Wells Cathedral, after Somerset Council’s Mendip Markets Team deemed an old tree on the original site unsafe due to recent storms.
The Wells Christmas Market has become an annual tradition in the city, drawing visitors from across Somerset and further.
Established to bring the community together and support local businesses during the festive season, the market has grown over the years to become a key event in the city’s calendar.
Councillor Federica Smith-Roberts, lead member for communities, housing revenue account, culture, equalities, and diversity, said: “We would like to thank the Cathedral for being accommodating and ensuring this popular event could go ahead safely.
“It was heartwarming to see so many people enjoying everything our city has to offer. The market showcased local talent and creativity, truly reflecting Wells’ vibrant community spirit and boosting our thriving local commerce.
“A huge thank you goes out to all the amazing local businesses, the Diocese of Bath and Wells, Wells Cathedral, The Bishop’s Palace, The Chamber of Commerce, the City Council, Somerset Council Officers, and our traders for their tremendous support in making this market a success.
“On behalf of everyone at Somerset Council, I extend my warmest wishes for a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
“Let's continue to support our incredible local and independent businesses that make Wells such a unique and wonderful place.”
