THE Met Office has issued a yellow thunderstorm warning in Somerset due to expected weather conditions that may cause some disruption.

Showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop on Thursday, according to the Met Office, potentially causing delays and cancellations to public services such as buses and trains.

For those living in areas prone to flooding, there are ways to prepare for the poor weather conditions. More information is available on the Met Office website.

The heaviest showers expected on Thursday could result in 20–30mm of rainfall within just an hour. Over a 24-hour period, accumulations could reach as much as 70-90mm in areas where multiple showers impact the same location.

The Met Office recorded 1,695.9mm of rain from October 2022 to March 2024, the highest for any 18-month period since data collection began in 1836.

A Met Office spokesperson said: “Heavy showers and thunderstorms are likely to break out across parts of England and Wales on Thursday afternoon. Where the showers do occur, they could be torrential, with the additional hazards of lightning, hail, and gusty winds.

“The exact location of the showers is still uncertain, and some places will stay dry all day.”
