Another reader has voiced their concern for proposed parking charges in the Somer Valley, claiming that they are "not sustainable in a small town".

It has been put forward yet again about charging for car parking in Midsomer Norton. Ask yourself why it was turned down before.
If you do that, for me as a local, supporting local traders for over 30 years then I will think twice before coming down to Midsomer Norton. I do walk when I can but asking me to pay to park in my local town whether, its half an hour or longer, from my low wage on top of running car costs etc is asking too much! Money spent on car parking could be better spent in the shops! Please remember it is the locals who support the town, with visitors as help.
Asking traders and staff to pay for parking may be a London and big city thing, but not sustainable in a small town here.
Putting this forward is starting to put me off sustainable, enviroment, emissions etc.
How is it that over the years previous Councils have made it possible to have free parking and yet despite all the cut backs every year, and raising of taxes etc there is still no bucket of money that can be put forward.
Please do not charge! Regardless of whether its done in other places, that is no excuse and the car park is small.
Just when people are moving on after the pandemic you want to cause an obstacle to stop it, please don’t.
