This pub for sale sits in the centre of town and is “full of character” - with more than 400 years of history.
The Pelican, in Chew Magna, was first established in 1615, shortly after the village’s name was changed from Bishop’s Chew in approximately 1600.
This is also the same year that a settlement was first established in Tunbridge Road, meaning that the pub was likely created in conjunction with the first homes in the area.
On the ground floor of the building is the main bar, with a character bar servery, a “huge” stone fireplace and sash windows to the right, and a stone hearth to the left, with these areas able to accommodate a combined 55 customers.
Also on the ground floor is a commercial kitchen, an additional preparation room, and customer toilets.
There is also a function room, named The Barn, which is between the main bar and the garden, and has seating for approximately 30 covers and a fitted bar servery.
On the first floor, there are two apartments, which could be used as staff or owners’ accommodation.
Outside, there is a courtyard garden which can seat 60 customers, a lawn and patio garden with space for 50, an outside barbecue and a sun-blind.
The property is being sold by estate agent Sprosen for a price of £800,000.
The agent said: “The main building is a stunning two-storey construction of white washed stone under a pitched red tiled roof.
“In 2011 Chew Valley was voted "Best Village in Britain" in a Sunday Times survey and the village frequently wins regional categories in the "Village of the Year" competition.
“The business is situated in the centre of the village in a prime trading location.”
