DURING June and July Camerton and Peasedown Croquet Club continued the long running, annual, saga of matches played against the Weston-super-Mare Croquet Club.

Both clubs enter two teams into the South West Federation Summer League for Handicapped Play.

CPCC’s ‘A’ team beat WSM ‘B’ earlier in the summer so when the CPCC ‘B’ team travelled to Weston to play WSM ‘B’, there was honour at stake.

It was soon realised by the visiting team that the grass at Weston was much longer than is usual for a croquet lawn.

Some adjustments were needed to control the croquet ball to the required length; however, adjustments quickly made, CPCC won three of the first four games. Success continued in the next two rounds and by lunch Camerton and Peasedown were ahead 8 points to 4.

Despite their better knowledge of the playing surface Weston-s-Mare, the home side failed to rally in the afternoon scoring only one and a half points, leaving Camerton and Peasedown the winners on the day by 14.5 to 5.5 points.

Team captain and CPCC Club reporter for this match, Des Back, congratulated the whole team on their exceptional performance and commented: ‘No one player could be singled out; they were all stars’.
