The old adage that ‘only mad dogs and English men go out in the midday sun’ certainly doesn’t seem to ring true this summer, as it would seem that while our menfolk seem to play most of their games in the evening, our Ladies are out there on the green in the heat of the day.
This week, our intrepid Ladies ventured forth all the way to Fosseway for a North Somerset League game, and it was certainly an ‘unlucky’ result for our girls, as they lost 2–10 by thirteen shots! Once again braving the sun on Thursday, this time for a Wild League game, we welcomed local rivals from Paulton to our green for what turned out to be a very tight game. This time it was lucky for Norwest, as we won 8–4.
It has been an extremely busy and very successful week for our Men. On Tuesday evening, they were away to Fosseway for a Wedmore Plate game, which they won 83–57, and they now go on to the Quarter-Final, which they will play against Weston, Bath. Following on from this success, on Wednesday they went to Prattens for a very tight Mid-Somerset League game, which they won 14–2 by only two shots. The only blip of the week occurred on Thursday, when they played Purnell in another MSL game which was re-arranged due to the ill-fated England football game, and like England, our chaps came second, with a 2–14 score line.
On Saturday, it was back to winning form in the County League. The A team were at home to Frome Park, and they won after an extremely tight game which was drawn on shots, but our lads managed to win 7–5 on points. The B team were away to Stothert and Pitt, and they notched up a very nice score of 12–0, winning by thirty shots.
Sunday saw a Mixed team out on the green to welcome the bowlers from Box for a friendly Triples game. This was the first of what we hope will become an annual fixture. Thanks to Shirley and Merv for a super tea afterwards, especially the homemade cake. Who won? Well, we did!
And finally, to the Funday. After my appeal a couple of weeks ago for tombola and raffle prizes, I’m sorry to say that the response has been somewhat lacklustre. I can count on the fingers of one hand the number of people who have answered my plea and come up with the goods. So come on you Norwesters, let’s see what you can do to support, what is after all, your club.
