CAMERTON and Peasedown ‘B’ team (handicap) entertained Weston Super Mare ‘A’ team at home. The rain stayed away although there was a cooling wind.
The morning session was very tight with wins for both teams and matches halved meaning at lunch time the scores were level at 7½ to 7½. It was all to play for in the afternoon session.
The afternoon was similar; a win for one side, followed by a win for the other, 7½ to 7½ became 7½ – 8½, became 8½ – 8½, became 8½ – 9½, became 8½ – 10½. At this stage the Weston- super-Mare ‘A’ team were already victorious but CPCC won the last match bringing the final result 9½ – 10½ to Weston-super-Mare.
Camerton and Peasedown ‘B’ had been up against an experienced Weston-super-Mare ‘A’ team but they had held their own and only just lost at the end. The Camerton and Peasedown star player of the day was Simon Munton who won three of his four games.
On June 8th the Camerton and Peasedown Level GC team travelled to Nailsea to play Nailsea ‘A’ who fielded a strong team on their home lawns.
Unfortunately, on the day, CPCC could not field their strongest team, two of their best players being unavailable; the result would certainly have been closer had the full strength team been available.
Nevertheless, Ros Key-Pugh, Charles Fingleton, David Milford and Des Back were not disgraced as they all claimed one win. David Milford repeated, for the second match in a row, what has become his trade mark action of beating the opposition’s best player for his win.
Colin Britt, who captained the team, played well and won three of his four singles and one doubles with Ros Key-Pugh. The team’s performance was better in the second half of the day; having been 10-2 down at one point they won five matches in the last eight and only ran out losers by 13 points to 7.
Competitors in the Croquet England C-level competition convened at Camerton & Peasedown on June 11th for a round of qualification in this National Event. Camerton & Peasedown, being the hosting club, was well represented on the day.
Preliminary group matches were completed and the round robin winners went forward to a knock- out main event. The winner was Roger Booth (Eynsham CC) and he automatically goes forward to the National Final at Watford; Matthew Parsons (Bradford-on Avon), Jill Bateman (Cheltenham CC) and Patricia Naish (Camerton & Peasedown CC) all scored points.
