Wells Golf Club’s Seniors travelled to Knowle and managed to complete their match in relatively clear weather, with the highlight being a superb hole-in-one by Mike Gee, the fifth of his career.
Gee and Captain, Glyn Hallett, won their match 4&3, as did Nick Carter and Bill O’Callaghan. However, despite a fighting half by Nick Wilson and Bill Carruthers, the team unfortunately had to settle for second place.
The Seniors’ Open proved the catalyst for a change in the weather and continuous rain was the order of the day! A large field competed in a two-ball Texas Scramble. The overall winners were Danny Dowell (Cricket St Thomas) and Pete Davis (Mendip) with 64.5. First Low Handicap Home: Richard Gould (Wells) and Matt Weeks (Chipping Sudbury); First High Handicap Home: Barry Keys and Tony Baker. Home winners of the Arthur Rice Cup were: Glen Crocker and Nick Wilson (Wells) followed by Dave Hayward (Wells) and Kevin Lane (Weston-super-Mare).
Congratulations to the dynamic duo of Janice White and Sue Slade, who won the PING 4BBB competition with 43 points. In second place with 35 points on countback was the team of Phyllis Lewison and Kitty Usher, ahead of Linda Wright and Diane Ramsay.
The Stragglers played away at Saltford, where there was a win for Saltford by five games to nil. John Hockey and Craig McConnell lost 4/2, Gary Leigh and Richard Sheard lost on the eighteenth, Terry Pearce and Bernhard Young by two, Richard Mansfield and Ron Davy lost by 5/4 and finally Terry Searle and Adam Holliday lost by 2/1.
There were some excellent scores returned in the Men’s Tweedale Medal, with Neil Hawkins winning Division One with nett 64. The Division Two winner was Bill Carruthers, with nett 68, and in Division Three, Geoff Ead came in first, with nett 64. Two spots were won by Jim O’Farrell and Steve Whatley.
