After two weeks of fun golf events, it was back to serious competition for the Farrington Park Ladies Section.
Players with a handicap of 20.1 to 36 were competing to represent Farrington in the Somerset County’s Barlow Cup Stableford competition. Players outside of this handicap range had a separate qualifying Stableford competition.
Summer golf has arrived with firm fairways and fast putting surfaces and the countryside resplendent in dazzling shades of green. The fine sunny weather was tempered by a cool north easterly wind, which refuses to move from its route across northern Europe.
Forty three players were in the field of which twenty five were trying to qualify for the Barlow Cup.
Mandy Hobbs continued her fine form with a two-spot birdie at the 8th hole and finished first in Division 1 with 38 points. Second place with 36 points was Jackie Walker, who also had a birdie at the 8th. Carol King birdied the par 5 18th hole and finished third with 35 points. Also worthy of mention was Captain Pauline Young, who had an eagle at the par 4, 1st hole.
Division 3 saw a fine score of 39 points from Peggy Edwards to take first place ahead of Lesley Stone (35) and Maureen Goodsir (32).
Division 2 was the Barlow Cup qualifier and there were some notable scores from the competitors, nineteen of whom scored 30 points or more. Jane Waller had a two-spot birdie at the 15th and there were several other birdies amongst the winners. Pauline Brixey had seven pars in her round to finish third with a very good score of 42 points. Lo Dallocco scored steadily throughout her round and finished with a flourish, birdie-ing the par 5 18th to earn four points and finish in second place with 43 points. Scoring four points each on four holes including a birdie at the par 3 15th and scoring well on the other holes earned an impressive 44 points for the winner.
Kath Cox won Division 2 and earned the right to represent Farrington in the Barlow Cup final to be held at Enmore GC in August.
