Last Friday was the first of the league’s cup finals at Shepton Mallet, the Dimmock Green KO Cup.
It was played between two of the top teams in the Premier League, leaders Pilton Utd and Frome Collegians, who will certainly be challenging for the top spot when they catch up with their fixtures.
It was a fairly even game throughout, perhaps Frome edging the first half and Pilton taking the second, with the winner and only goal of the game scored by Barry Sandquest, for Frome, in the first half. The score of 1-0 was the final score – this is two years on the trot Collegians have lifted this cup.
In front of a large crowd, at the end of the game, the league’s President presented the medals to both teams, also he presented Theo Sing with the Man of the Match trophy.
In the Premier League, second place Peasedown Albion entertained Coleford, who were two goals up inside the first five minutes. Playing very well in the first half, they could have sealed it with a thunderous header that smashed against the post, the play quickly going to the other end of the pitch and from a corner the home team reduced the arrears, Rico Sobers heading in on the far post, 2-1 to Coleford at the break.
The home team took the second half with very good attacking play throughout. It was a speculative shot from 25 yards by Dan Hucker that seemed to catch the visitors’ goalkeeper on the back foot, the ball creeping inside the post to level up the score. Most people thought the 2-2 scoreline was a fair result on the game overall.
Westhill Sports eased themselves away from the bottom two with a 1-0 win at home to Westfield Res, sub Tom Rideout netting for the home team.
High Littleton are fighting hard for one of the top two places in the First Division, they came up against a team in Somer Valley at home who are going well at the moment, the game ending in a 2-2 draw. Getting the goals for the home team, Luke Tucker and Josh Lines; for the visitors Teall and a last minute equaliser from Chris Spurrey. Chew Res are also eyeing up a top two finish, they beat bottom club, Meadow Rangers, 3-0, netting their goals, were Seb King, Cam Haskins and Chris Willway, and Wells A had a home win against Clutton, 2-1.
The result of the day must have been Coleford Res’ win away to Saltford, 2-1 as they travelled with only ten men, this result keeps them in touch with the second place team Weston Bath, also Belrose is another team battling away for one of the top spots, they picked up two very useful points at Stoke, winning 5-2.
It’s getting very tight at the top of the Third Divsion, Frome Collegians moving up to third with games in hand, they won at home against Chilcompton A, 6-1, on the 4G pitch. Getting the goals for the home team, Dan Berryman 2, Tom Brown, Chris Bird and 2 from sub, Brad Mullane, Jason Curtis getting the consolation goal for the visitors. Pilton Res draw level with top team Peasedown Albion A, beating Chilcompton United at home, 3-0, and they have a game in hand. Hitting the net, Toby Collins 2 and Dean Rowland. At last Charlton United secured their first win of the season, going away to Westfield A, 2-0.
