Ian Covill, the goalkeeper for Midsomer Norton Walking Football Group, has been selected to play for the International Walking Football Federation over sixties England team.
Ian commenced playing walking football two and a half years ago, having played football in his younger days in the Sunday league for the RAF and the Fire and Rescue service.
He’s represented Midsomer Norton Walking Football Group at various tournaments in the local region, and has been nominated as Man of the Match on a couple of occasions. Ian is a popular member of the group, and having recently got married, it cost him a lot of doughnuts for the players – as it is the tradition for any celebratory occasion!
Ian was invited for the IWFF England trials this July in Nottingham, which resulted in him being successfully selected to represent England for the World Championships this September in Sweden.
Sadly, this was cancelled due to the pandemic, but friendly games are expected later this year, followed by the Euro’s in Paris next February, the Home Nation games to be played home and away, then the prestigious World Championships in Barcelona next June.
The Walking Football group meet every Tuesday and Thursday, at Midsomer Norton Sports Centre at 10 am. If you’d like to have a go, contact Angelo Ruiz on: 07470 259513.
