WELTON Rovers’ search for their first points of the season continued on a very wet Tuesday evening at West Clewes when they were well beaten 7-1 by a rampant Street side in the Premier Division of the Jewson Western Football League. It was Rovers’ 20th defeat of the season.

Street put five past Welton within the first 30 minutes. The rout started in the second minute when Street captain Harry Foster was found unmarked in the Welton area and slotted home from close range.

Three minutes later the visitors got their second when Foster was again free and in space in the area and easily scored.

The visitors were firing on all cylinders and Welton did not have an answer and on 15 minutes Freddie Haden intercepted a poor back pass and slid the ball past Welton keeper Mackenzie Welsh to make it three.

A couple of minutes later former Welton player Connor Linhams’ effort thumped against the Welton post with a long range effort.

Street got their fourth on 25 minutes when Josh Radford appeared to have handballed in the area, a big shout went up, the Welton players stopped but referee Charles waived ‘play on’ which Radford did and curled his shot into the Welton net.

The rampage continued and Linham got a fifth on the half hour and the post saved Welton just before halftime when Radford’s effort rattled the upright.

The rain was pouring down as the second half began and West Clewes was a depressing place if you were a Welton supporter. It only took five minutes into the restart before the visitors got their sixth.

Welton did get more into the game as Street took their foot off the peddle and were rewarded with a consolation goal when Arian Askari finished off a good Welton move to thump the ball past Lewis Williams in the Street goal.

However just to show their total dominance the visitors went up the other end, won a corner and the delivery was met first time by a Street player who volleyed it into the net to make it seven and complete the rout.

In another midweek game, Barnstaple Town moved up to within two points of leaders Brixham AFC with a splendid 4-3 away victory over fifth-placed Buckland Athletic - leaving themselves with a game in hand on Brixham.
