Welton got back to winning ways with a top drawer performance over their visitors from Bristol. These were an important three points that saw Welton pull away from the mix at the bottom of the table.

An impressive crowd turned up for this football match under the lights at West Clewes on Friday 3rd, despite it being a very cold evening. Both sides went for it straight from the kick off. A 20 yard smash from Will Hunter kept low but veered away from the target. However, Welton were not to be denied and took the lead after ten minutes when Billy Manning robbed a hesitant defender out on the right flank, looked up and saw Cadbury Heath keeper Jordan Schofield off his line so he curled in an absolute class shot from distance which went over the keeper and flew into the empty net. Welton didn’t rest on their laurels and continued to press the visitors.

Good work from fullback Jaiden Savery saw him ping his cross over to the left were Ben Wych was on hand to connect but his effort flew over the bar. The Heath responded and a long range effort from Ashley Kendall which failed to trouble Chris Blammon in the Welton goal. Welton were really taking the game to the visitors. Schofield denied Lewis Russell and a cracking shot from the lively Toby Cole was saved at the second attempt by Schofield. At the other end, Blammon was on top form when he produced a great diving save to push away Ali Boyers thunderbolt. Just before half time Boyer found the net for the visitors only to be ruled out for offside.

The second half began with Welton pressing for that all important second goal, Lewis Hunt met a cross from Savery at the far post but with the goal at his mercy he headed wide of the target. That was a great chance, but minutes later, a quality run down the left flank from Cole saw him deliver a pin point cross out to the right where Welton captain Russell was on a charge to meet the ball first time to volley home past Schofield to score number two for Welton.

As the half progressed, the visitors pressed but the Welton defence dropped back and dealt with all that was thrown at them and Cadbury Heath were unable to penetrate the Welton rear guard. In the end Welton ran out worthy winners and also collected their first clean sheet of the season. An excellent performance that heartened the Green Army on a cold night.
