IN A recent interview, Angus Youngson and Bill Wheeler, the joint managers of Welton Rovers, have shared their vision for the club, acknowledging the challenges and outlining their long-term goals.
They took over in November, during a difficult period for the club, becoming the third managerial team of the season.
Talking to the Jewson Western League Podcast, Youngson and Wheeler described inheriting a depleted team with only seven available players. The managers emphasised that their primary focus is on the long-term development of the club.
This involves building a team, a squad and ultimately revitalising the entire club. While recognising the importance of results and team performance, they stressed the significance of buy-in from players and management to attract supporters and create a positive social atmosphere around the games.
Wheeler noted that there were no specific expectations for this season, with the emphasis on building a foundation for the next. He added that the club recognised the need for time to turn things around.
Discussing the Jewson Western League Premier Division, Youngson acknowledged its competitiveness and physical nature. Both managers highlighted the importance of the recent victory over St Balzey, for the volunteers and supporters who have consistently shown up despite difficult results. They recognised the need to restore hope and ambition within the club
.Addressing social media commentary, Youngson emphasised the importance of focusing on the facts of their situation and the project they are undertaking. He spoke about the need to spin the narrative to their advantage, using it as motivation to turn the mood around.
Welton’s breakthrough this season came on Saturday, February 1, when they gained a 7-4 home victory over St Blazey. Although they remain bottom of the table, it was reward for Welton’s managerial pair after a despairing run of results.
