Last year’s Player of the Year, Alan White, continued where he had left off in 2023 with victory in the first event of this year in the Seniors section of Fosseway Golf Club.
His nett total of 68 was enough to win the January medal by one shot from Cyril Blacker. Another consistent player, Martyn Cuer, was third with a nett 70.
The medal competition was followed by the Seniors AGM. All the officials were re-elected. Alan Jones continues as General Secretary and Medal Secretary, Geoff Hallett as Treasurer, Chris Appleton as Competition Secretary, Frank Dance as Social Match Secretary, Howard Nowell as Fixture Secretary and Malcolm Tucker as Press Officer. One of the Seniors’ most recent recruits, Paul Trigg, agreed to organise the away day and other visits to local courses.
In his annual report, Jones welcomed others who alongside Trigg had enlisted during the last year – Paul Ellis, Shaun Goodwin, Bob Townsend and Phil Winsley. Sadly two playing members, John Waters and Nick Foxwell, had passed away in 2023.
The secretary congratulated Frank Dance who had taken over as captain for the social matches and who had seen the team win four matches, lose three and halve one. Jones felt that the half at Cannington was probably the outstanding result of the lot.
The Seniors had also put up a good show in the Somerset Rose Bowl narrowly losing to a strong Saltford team on their own course. He thanked the main club members who had supported the Seniors in this event.
Chris Appleton was thanked for all his work in his first year as Competition Secretary and Cyril Blacker and Mike Weeks for organising the roll ups.
Geoff Hallett gave a comprehensive treasurer’s report and it was agreed that to keep the finances in a good order, entry for all competitions would go up to £3 and the subsidy for social matches would be removed.
