AFTER a winter of keen rivalry in the Seniors section of Fosseway Golf Club, the finals of the Winter League and Guerwyn Thomas Cup have both been reached.
In the semi-finals of the Winter League, the star act came from Cyril Blacker who was in irresistible form, beating Andy Flagg 8 & 7. Blacker’s putter was red hot and taking advantage of the shots received produced a dominating performance. Paul Trigg was in equally impressive form in the other semi-final in the competition, defeating Alan Jones 5 & 3 . The result means there is a repeat of last year’s Winter League final with Trigg looking to retain his title against Blacker, in what promises to be a splendid showdown between the pair.
There was a measure of revenge for Jones In the Guerwyn Thomas Cup semi-final when he paired up with Shaun Goodwin to beat Howard Nowell and Trigg. In an intriguing match that swung both one way and then the other the pairs were all square coming down the last hole and it took a killer putt from Goodwin to decide the encounter.
In the other tie in the event, Martyn Cuer and Frank Reeves took an early grip of their match with Paul Ellis and George Thurston and they maintained the pressure to get over the line and win 4 & 3.
There was no doubting the winner in the January medal event with Noel Chatfield being the clear winner by six shots. He came home with an excellent nett score of 63. Three other players returned nett scores of 69 but after countback Steve Brixey came in second with Martyn Cuer in third spot of a well contested event.
*Like most golfers in the county, players at Fosseway have endured some bad weather this month.
