The last ten days have been very busy for the Farrington Park Ladies’ Section.
The Manor Course Championship took place on Tuesday 4th July. The Manor Course at Farrington Park is a 9-hole par 3 course. There were three trophies to be won: The Manor Course Champion (gross), the Nett Champion and the Veterans’ Champion (over 70’s). Competitors were required to play two rounds.
Barbara Lawson had the perfect start by getting a hole in one on the first hole. The dull, cloudy weather with just the one outburst of rain did not dampen the spirits of the seventeen competitors.
Captain Pauline Young presented the trophies to winners, The Manor Course Champion with a gross of sixty four on countback was Sue Skyrme, just pipping Rosie Brown also with sixty four. The Nett Champion was Margaret Seery with a Nett of thirty nine, in second place was Lizzie Wood with a nett forty. The Veterans’ Posy was won by Min Woodward with a nett of forty three on countback, just beating our “hole in one” Barbara Lawson, also on forty three.
The section is rightly proud of their junior girl players and they were bursting with pride when they found out that Lilianna Marshall had won the Somerset County Girls’ Championship at Worlebury Golf Club last weekend. Lilianna won by five shots over the two-day 36-hole competition with a gross of 164 with fellow junior Libbie Dezis coming third with gross 170.
The Biddle Flag medal competition had a smaller field than usual due to many players having commitments elsewhere. Division One players were eligible to win the Trophy with Division Two players having a separate competition.
Janet Corbett won division Two with nett seventy three with Marilyn Cass and Isobel Panton finishing second and third.
Scoring was tight in Division One and countback had to be used to decide the winner after three ladies finished with nett score of seventy four. Lena Warren secured the Trophy with a better back 9 score but Sue Vaile made a valiant effort with birdies at the par 3 15th & par 5 18th to finish second and Barbara Lawson continued her good form to finish third.
The July medal was hotly contested on a warm and very windy day. The field of thirty-one was divided into three divisions to reflect the wide range of handicaps. Division One was won by Lally Gibson with nett seventy six, followed by Jackie Willcox (nett seventy seven) and Carol King (nett eighty two).
Division Three saw a clear win for Maureen Goodsir with a nett seventy four. Maureen was six shots clear of the field with Peggy Edwards taking second place with nett eighty and Janet Corbett third with nett eighty one.
There was excitement in Division Two when Pauline Brixey scored a hole-in-one at the par 3 15th and she treated her fellow competitors to a glass of Pimms on their return to the clubhouse. Pauline will receive the Hole-in-One Trophy with Barbara Lawson at the annual awards dinner at Christmas. The challenge for the rest of the Section is to add their names too!
Five of the sixteen Division Two players scored below the nett par of seventy three. A birdie at the par 3 10th helped Liz Thomas to a nett seventy one beating Heather Woodland on countback to fourth place. Four pars and further steady scoring throughout her round earned a nett seventy for Margaret Seery for third place but she was beaten on countback by Jane Ball, who took second place courtesy of a better back 9 which included birdies at the par 3 10th and 15th holes. Top spot was claimed by the on-form Barbara Lawson with a very tidy round of nett sixty nine which included three pars.
