A FULL field of 120 golfers played in the Captains’ Drive In event at Mendip Golf Club on a glorious sunny day.

The competition was a 4 person team event and after the golf and the traditional Drive Ins, the clubhouse was full for the exchange of captains jackets and introductory speeches from the 2025 men’s captain Jack Hayes and ladies’ captain Louise Scott.

The winning team were Tony Logan/Clive Copp/Pippa Brown/Susy Rudkin with with a score of 85 points. Runners Up were Craig Robertson/William Burns/Ham Ridene/David Forshaw with 83 point and in 3rd place with 82 Kelvin Adams/Paul Godwin/Debbie Godwin/Annette Jobbins.

The best all men’s team with 79 were Hugh Glandfield/Justin Barrow/Tony Taylor/David Peel. The best ladies team with a score of 76 were Gina Howard/Allison Rummings/Caroline Simper/Lillian Peel and the best mixed team, also with 76, were Glynn Haddock/Sarah James/Richard Clifford/Cliff Hall.

Forty four ladies played in the Qualifying Stableford and with the course in such fine condition and the weather remaining sunny some excellent scores were recorded. Div 1 went to Edwina Willis with 40 points with Jenny Ahlberg 2nd with 38 point after count back from Susy Rudkin. Div 2 was won by Jo Espley with 41, Lyn Jones was 2nd with 39 and Lizzie Wood was 3rd with 37 after count back.

Div 3 saw two fine rounds of 42 with Rebecca Edwards winning on count back from Sally Humphries with Annette Jobbins 3rd with 39 after count back. A further 15 ladies played in the 9 hole qualifier which saw an amazing score of 25 points from Carol Howerd but even that was just 1 point better than Jenny Howarth who was in 2nd place with 24.

The Ladies Alliance A team made a great start to their season with a 12-2 home win over Mendip Spring with wins from Aimee Sawyer, Ellen Reakes, Libbie Dezis, Jinhee Page, Lynne Vowles and Lena Warren. The Ladies Alliance B team were not so fortunate, going down to a 5–9 defeat when visiting Saltford. Mendip’s points came from wins by Pauline Young and Maureen Charlton and a half from Chris Down.

More than one hundred competitors played in the Seniors Captain Paul Wood’s Drive In event. Again after the golf the traditional Drive In took place followed by a full clubhouse who witnessed Paul receiving his Jacket from last year’s Seniors Captain. The scoring was quite incredible from the 4 persons Texas Scramble Teams with 22 Teams recording net 59’s (12 under par) or better. Winning with a net 53 were Phil Butcher/James Harris/David Peel/Alan Snow and after a 4 way count back Malcolm Dawkins/Andrew Griffiths/Stephen Lake/Justin May were 2rd with 54 and Paul Cains/Drew Foley/Ham Ridene/Rob Thain were 3rd.

The Seniors enjoyed a fine 4-1 win in the Somerset Scratch KO against Taunton & Pickeridge with wins coming from Benedict Toomey, Charlie Pike, Gary Quin and Steve Davis.

Meanwhile, Immediate Past Seniors Captain Tony Scott has presented a cheque for £6,638 on behalf of the club to James Warren from Alzheimer’s Research UK being monies raised during his year of Captaincy
